Synopsis[edit | edit source]
Season Finale. Juliette's fate seems sealed when certain truths finally come to light.
Plot[edit | edit source]
After discovering a recording of the the Outside and realising that the leaders of the Silo have been lying to the population, Juliette is determined to display the recording on all of the screens throughout the Silo. Juliette doesn't want to give up, however, and is determined, with Danny telling her that whilst it is not impossible to do, the IT Department controls all of the screens throughout the Silo and this would be difficult to do. Notwithstanding this, every thirty levels of the Silo there are signal boosters, which they can potentially use to broadcast the recording.
Juliette is confident that she can get them through the security checkpoints and they decide to hijack the booster on Level 126.
Meanwhile in the Silo's control room, Diego discovers that the Hard drive is on Level 22. Sims redirects all of the Raiders there, but Juliette, Patrick, and Danny are able to escape via the trash chute.
Sims becomes aware that Billings had attempted to enter Juliette's apartment but was stopped by Judicial, who were searching it at the time. Sims questions Billings over his motives, and he tells him that he was trying to find out what Juliette's reason for wanting to go out to clean was, in the hopes that this would help locate her. During the conversation between the two, Sims notices that Billings is holding his right hand with his left and asks him why, causing Billings to Patrick.
Juliette, Patrick, and Danny are able to make their way to Level 126 as planned, and plug the hard drive into the signal booster; this triggers an alert in the control room, and Sims radios Karins to head over to the location. Diego quickly realises that Juliette her accomplices are linking all of the screens within the Silo, and the image of the Outside quickly becomes visible on the screens in the control room. The technicians are shocked, and it becomes clear that they too are unaware of what is happening Outside of the Silo. Bernard quickly instructs them to look away from the screen and forget what they have seen. He enters a command into the computer which quickly shuts all of the screens within the Silo off.
Sims receives a radio message from Karins, who tells him that she has two men in custody on Level 126. Bernard is quick to realise that Juliette, now alone, is utilising the Silo's trash chute to move about the Silo undetected. Bernard orders that the deputies throw heavy machinery down the trash chute in an attempt to knock her to the bottom, where she can be apprehended. Karins warns Juliette to get out of the chute on the next floor as they have been ordered to knock her down; Juliette acknoweldges but is hit by something and falls to the Down Deep, where she is pulled out before she is crushed.
Juliette is later recovering in Martha's workshop, when Knox arrives and tells them that Judicial is outside — he has given her up for the good of Mechanical. Juliette tells Knox that he agrees with his decision, and asks for a moment alone with Martha.
Bernard and Sims arrive moments later and after a heated discussion between Juliette and Sims, Bernard asks for a moment alone with Juliette. He smashes the hard drive and offers Juliette a deal: he won't punish those in the Down Deep if she waives her right to a Judicial hearing and says that she wanted to go outside. Juliette agrees, but asks to be told what happened to George Wilkins. She is led out of Mechanical in cuffs.
After Juliette is taken from Mechanical, Martha talks with Shirley, with the latter blaming Knox for turning Juliette in. Martha admits that she agrees with Knox's decision and that he had no other choice, but this does not satisfy Shirley, who counters that they always have a choice. Juliette, meanwhile, is led up the Stairwell in full view of all of the Silo's residents; a direct and deliberate act by Bernard to dirty her reputation among those in the Silo. Martha finally leaves the confines of her workshop for the first time in over twenty-five years.
Martha goes to talk with Carla in supply and enquires about the heat tape used to seal the suits when people are sent out to clean. Juliette had stolen some of this tape from IT, to which Carla says had repercussions for Supply, with Judicial and IT coming down hard on them. It becomes clear that the heat tape used in Mechanical is better than that used in IT.
Bernard orders Juliette's shackles to be removed as she is taken into the monitoring room—a direct breach of the Silo's protocol—and shown the CCTV footage of the night that George Wilkins fell to his death from the stairwell of the Silo. The footage clearly shows George falling from the stairwell after looking into the camera one final time; it becomes clear that George's death was an accident, or suicide, and that it was not orchestrated by Bernard or Judicial.
Juliette is placed into a holding cell and measured for the suit she will be sent out to clean in. Bernard and Sims discuss how it is a rather quiet day in the Silo; a similar feeling to when Holston Becker was sent out to clean. Juliette is visited by her father, Pete Nichols who asks why she asked to go outside, but Juliette avoids the question as she is unable to answer—a direct condition of the deal she made with Bernard. Lukas Kyle is brought before Bernard who tells him that he is being punished for not reporting Juliette earlier, but he is not being sent out to clean. Instead, he will be punished to ten-years in the mines.
Shirley goes up to the holding cell to visit Juliette and bring her food, but Juliette tells her that she isn't hungry. Shirley insists that she take the box and that Martha said that it was for luck; Juliette takes the box with the understanding that there is a double meaning to Shirley's words and that Martha is trying to send her a discrete message. Inside the box, she finds a message from Martha that reads "you wanted the truth. The truth is that I love you. Have no fear, they're good in supply". Billings, meanwhile, tells his wife that Sims has found out he has the Syndrome. Kathleen worries about what this could mean for them, but Billings tells her not to worry — he has been granted an exemption by Judicial and the Mayor.
Bernard talks with Juliette and asks her if she is sorry that she took the job. He tells her that her parents were not meant to have children, but accidents sometimes happen. Bernard tells her that everyone is valuable to the Silo and that he appreciates everything that she has done and that none of what he is doing is personal. Juliette became a threat to the survival of the Silo when she became Sheriff and he had to intervene. Juliette questions why Bernard doesn't tell the Silo that it is safe to go outside, and Bernard tells her that the Founders left them many mysteries. Juliette tells Bernard that she won't clean, but Bernard remarks that everyone who goes out to clean says the same thing, but ultimately ends up cleaning.
Juliette is prepared imminently for her cleaning as crowds begin to gather in the cafeteria of the Silo to witness the event. Bernard, now in his office, contemplates over the shattered remains of the hard drive. Shirley is still upset with Knox and gives him the hard shoulder for turning Juliette in. As Juliette is placed in her suit and the final preparations begin for her cleaning, Martha arrives in the cafeteria at the surprise of everyone present.
Bernard completes the ceremony of sending Juliette out to clean himself, since there is no Sheriff. Juliette climbs the stairs and exits through the airlock into the the Outside. Whilst she is initially shocked that the world outside is green and lustrous, she immediately begins to realise that what she is seeing is an illusion, exactly the same as the view that Jane Carmody saw when she was sent out to clean. Juliette walks to the sensor but before cleaning, she drops the wool to the floor — a clear act of defiance towards Bernard. All of the residents of the Silo are shocked, and Sims is left questioning Bernard over what they do now. Bernard tells Sims to wait, as it won't be much longer before Juliette dies from exposure to the toxic air. Juliette stumbles around outside, ignoring the vision being shown to her through the visor. She finds Holston's body and pins the Sheriff badge to it; it becomes clear to Bernard that Juliette knows what she is being shown through the visor is a lie.
Juliette continues her climb to the hill, realising that the heat tape she was wrapped in is from Mechanical and therefore stronger than the tape regularly used to seal the suits. As she continues to climb, the vision in her visor flickers before turning off. Juliette is able to see the world outside for what it really is, a barren wasteland. As Juliette continues to walk, it becomes clear that the Silo is not the only Silo that was built.
