Throughout the series[edit | edit source]

SY117[edit | edit source]

Martha Walker is charged with running the electronics workshop in the lower levels of the Silo. In SY117, her marriage to Carla breaks down, and as a result, Martha becomes agoraphobic and dos not leave the workshop for twenty-five years from this date.

No later than five years pass, and Martha is surprised when a thirteen year old Juliette Nichols arrives in Mechanical with a note from her father, Pete Nichols, a respected doctor within the Silo. The note states that he would like his daughter to shadow the engineers in Mechanical, but Martha is skeptical and does not believe that the note is genuine when she notices a spelling mistake on the note. She contacts Dr. Nichols, making him aware of his daughter's whereabouts, and he arrives to face his daughter not long after. A short conversation later, however, Juliette is able to convince her father, and Martha, that she wants to become an engineer, and as a result, is allowed to stay and learn; she is assigned to shadow Knox.[1]

Juliette Becomes Sheriff[edit | edit source]

After Holston Becker is sent out to clean, Juliette visits Martha's workshop to blow off steam. During the visit, she tells Martha about the events that led up to Holston's cleaning following the death of George Wilkins. It is later revealed that Holston had nominated Juliette to be the next Sheriff following him.

Ruth Jahns, the current Mayo of the Silo at the time, visits Martha in the wake of this news to ask about Juliette and whether or not she was fit for the role of Sheriff. Martha is able to convince Jahns that Juliette is fit for the role and would make a good Sheriff, and as a result, she is made Sheriff. Juliette continued to communicate with Martha via a radio whilst Sheriff as she investigated George's death despite this being against the Pact.[2]
