The Syndrome is a debilitating, neuralgic condition caused as a result of living under the pressure of life in the Silo.[1] The Syndrome first presents as an involuntary twitching, before this spreads to extremeties, which shake uncontrollably. When the condition progresses, muscle spasm's begin and flashes of pain whilst balance is impaired. The final stages of the Syndrome include an infection which attacks the brain, leading to cognitive impairment before the entire nervous system shuts down.
Residents of the Silo suffering with the Syndrome must, under Pact guidelines, report this to Medical, where they can recieve treatment. It is a violation of the Pact Artice 5 to hold public office if suffering from the Syndrome. Although, it has been shown that exemptions can be given by the Mayor and Judicial; Paul Billings was given such exemption.[2]
Silo Book Series[edit | edit source]
The exact cause for the Syndrome is not explained fully in the book further than the fact that it is caused by the pressures of living within the Silo. Hugh Howey, the author of the book series, however, has referenced that the Syndrome is similar to conditions caused by lack of vitamins such as Vitamin D.
